" MUSTAGHANIM "

Origin of the name: “MUSTAGHANIM” (Mostaganem): Machta (Winter Station) and Ghanem (Rich stockbreeder of sheep). In antiquity: A Port Romain “MURUSTAGA” Phéniciens had established counters on the coast of Tenes with Arzew. The true importance of Mostaganem seemed to be due to the establishment of a great number of Andalusian families which were attracted by the fertility of the ground. Thanks to this working population and many, the area covered splendid villages. About 1580, the city was opulent and lived in the luxury, the taxes paid with Turkish of Algiers of it are the proof. The Turks and the koulouglis occupied the city itself located on left bank of Ain - Sefra. It was the district reserved for the command and with the local aristocracy, the enclosing wall was bored of five (5) doors: the door of ech-Chelif in North, the door of Medjaher in the East, the door of Mascara in the south, the Door of Arzew and Navy carries it to the West. Mostaganem was occupied in July 1833 by Desmichel after a sharp resistance directed by the Emir Abdelkader in person. By the treaty of February 26, 1834, a consul of the Emir was approved to reside in the city, the decree of December 8 constitutes a bey of the French authority there and the treaty of Tafna in May 1837 preserved it at France. The convention of the TAFNA of May 20, 1837 had not made conceal that temporarily the weapons.
